AbstractTexts in spoken Standard Chinese were developed to improve and update Chinese materials to reflect current usage in Beijing and Taipei. The focus is on communicating in Chinese in practical situations, and the texts summarize and supplement tapes. The overall course is organized into 10 situational modules, student workbooks, and resource modules. This text covers the orientation module and the biographic information module. The orientation module involves talking about the students and where they are from, and the biographic information module involves talking about the students' background, family, studies, and occupation, and about their visit to China. Additionally, students need to undertake resource modules in pronunciation, romanization, and numbers, at the same time they are studying this text. The biographic information module provides linguistic and cultural skill training needed for a simple conversation typical of a first meeting situation in China. Background notes about Chinese languages, written Chinese, Chinese characters, and personal names and titles are presented. Drills, reference lists, vocabulary, and notes accompany each of the 12 units of the text. (SW)
