| Abstract | Students are introduced to the Haida language as well as to traditional Haida foods in this booklet, one in a series of curriculum materials on Southeast Alaska Natives. Ten selections written in simple language describe a Haida barbecue, Indian bread, sea cucumbers, black sea weed, the edible pulp sap of Hemlock, Indian ice cream made from soap berries, catching a ptarmigan, skukum root medicine, and Devil's Club Tonic. Readings include methods of food preparation, recipes, and time and place for gathering each food. Traditional customs associated with the foods are included; e.g., Devil's Club Tonic is made for a member of one phratry (Eagle or Raven) by a member of the opposite phratry and requires a token payment by the recipient. Many Haida words are included in the text and placed in parentheses following the English translation. Line drawings illustrate cooking methods, utensils, and the edible plants and animals. (JH) |
