AbstractBased on the Constitution and By-Laws of the Blackfeet Tribe, approved by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior in 1935, the Blackfeet Tribal Council has the authority to make civil and criminal laws and procedures to protect the peace, tranquility, and dignity of all persons residing within the Blackfeet Indian Reservation; to protect the traditions, customs, and Tribal laws; and to protect and preserve the natural and human resources of the Reservation. The laws the Blackfeet must obey and the punishments for breaking these laws are explained in lay terms in this volume. Section I, arranged alphabetically by subject, provides brief information on laws concerning abandoned ice boxes, bigamy, communicable disease, fish and game violations, inhaling toxic vapors, littering, malicious gossip, misbranding, neglecting dogs and other animals, public drunkeness, unauthorized use of property, and firing weapons. Section II describes court procedures for appeals, adoption, divorce, domestic relations, heirship and probate, juvenile code offenses, land exchange, motor vehicles code, parole, and suspension of sentence. This "Handbook of Tribal Law" has not yet been officially recognized by the Blackfeet Tribal Business Council. The contents are not to be considered law on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, but carry strong reflections in Tribal Court decisions. (NEC)
