AbstractThis report provides an overview of public playground equipment injuries, identifies risks associated with different types of equipment and surfaces, and examines the possible effects of approaches to reducing these injuries. Findings include the following: (1) falls are the most common type of playground equipment accident, (2) the proportion of all injuries which involved each of the major types of playground equipment (swings, slides, climbers, etc.) is roughly equivalent to the proportion of all playground equipment represented by each major type, (3) falls to paved surfaces account for a disproportionately high number of injuries and severe injuries relative to the amount of paved surfacing in use, (4) about five percent of total accidents involve either malfunctioning or broken equipment, (5) equipment modifications might have reduced injuries by 55,000 in a one year period, and (6) equipment spacing and playground layout and design may account for as many as 8,300 injuries. In this study, analyses by hazard pattern and by type of equipment were conducted. Study results for location, equipment condition and material as well as deaths related to public playground equipment are reported. Data tables, an analysis of technical requirements submitted by the National Bureau of Standards, study methodology, and a list of 293 special study cases are appended. (Author/RH)
