Abstract	Some of the underlying issues in dialects and language arts are clarified and questions commonly posed by practitioners are addressed. The discussion focuses on speaking and writing, and is organized around four topics: (1) the state of the English language in the United States today; (2) oral language instruction and assessment; (3) written language instruction and assessment; and (4) integrating dialect diversity into language arts. The specific questions addressed deal with issues and problems encountered by classroom teachers. Particular attention is given to the following matters: (1) reasons for the decline in standardized test scores; (2) academic standards as these are related to reading and writing; (3) language differences and the language arts teacher; (4) standard and non-standard dialects; (5) when and how to teach standard spoken English; (6) identifying children with language problems and differentiating between language disorders and dialect differences; (7) teaching writing to speakers of nonstandard dialects; (8) testing writing ability and nonstandard dialect speakers; and (9) the usefulness of providing students as well as teachers with information on dialects.
