| Abstract | A comparative view of changes in the academic profession during the last three decades is provided. The rapid expansion, increased government funding, growth of accountability, demand for relevance, minority groups' demands for compensatory education and use of the university as a forum for society's conflicts (e.g., the Vietnam War) are among changes cited as impacting on the present situation. Cross-national changes directly affecting the academic profession are summarized: (1) the imbalance in academic power with the academics gravitating to the metropolitan nations, (2) the focus on research to the detriment of teaching, (3) the decline of a sense of community among scholars, (4) the trend toward unionization and loss of job security, (5) the growing politicization of professors, (6) reform leading to loss of academic power, (7) the conflict between autonomy and accountability, and (8) the emergence of a class system in higher education. A bibliography of approximately 240 citations focusing on the academic profession outside the United States is included. (PHR) |
