Abstract | The question of whether educational technology can be of assistance to the public school teacher who is in the position of having to teach the rudiments of a second language that he himself has not mastered is addresed in this paper. A series of teaching and learning units were constructed and experimented with for two years in teaching English as a second language to 10- and 11-year-old students. The technology that was used allowed for a high degree of individualization of instruction, due particularly to the use of the cassette tape-recorder. The results show that the 10-year-old students performed better than a control group in a similar context. The instructional method used also seems to increase the motivation and enjoyment of the students in relation to English as a school subject. However, the learning environment thus created retains a certain rigidity unless it is enlivened by a teacher capable of speaking the second language and promoting dynamic exchanges between students.
