AbstractA survey of student charges at state universities and land grant colleges shows that the percentage rise of median undergraduate tuition and fees is less than the percentage rise of the consumer price index, that non-resident tuition is up almost 10 percent, that New England has the highest median regional student cost, and that resident medical and dentistry students and non-resident veterinary medicine students pay the largest tuition increases for 1979-1980. Other findings revealed that non-resident students lead in median of tuition differences over the previous year, that only two institutions held the line on all undergraduate costs, that public higher education costs vary widely from campus to campus, that highest and lowest cost by campus follow the usual regional patterns, and that long-term median tuition rises outstrip the long-term rise in the higher education price index. Data revealed that the median total undergraduate costs jumped less than the long-term rise of the higher education price index over the past decade. An alphabetical-by-state listing shows the changes in student charges in each category over the 1978-1979 figures. (Author/PHR)
