Abstract | Prior to setting forth recommended classroom procedures, this guide discusses the needs and characteristics of the student of English as a second language (ESL) as well as the requirements for successful ESL tutoring. The principles of ESL testing are set forth, and an informal placement pre-test and post test are included. The units of instruction cover both teaching methods and course content. Discussions of basic classroom techniques, such as various types of drills and the use of visual aids, alternate with descriptions of classroom activities designed to meet specific goals. These goals include the development of language skills, progress toward U.S. citizenship, and fostering cross-cultural communication. The last chapter consists of a tutor competency evaluation.
