AbstractThe nine papers in this document represent the final report of a workshop on research on literacy in developing countries. It is noted in the introduction by Kenneth King that research in literacy tends to be performed by persons who are also literacy activists and that the problem of motivation seems to be central to most literacy research. It is suggested that adult literacy research must be connected with research on the quality and effectiveness of elementary and secondary education. The papers included are: "Development Policy Outcomes of Adult Literacy Research"; "Literacy without Schooling: Testing for Intellectual Effects"; "Primary School Leaving Examinations, Basic Intellectual Skills, and Equity: Some Evidence from Kenya"; "International Study of the Retention of Literacy and Numeracy: the Egypt Case Study"; "Research on Innovative Nonformal Education for Rural Adults: Implications for Literacy Motivation"; "New Research Approaches to Literacy Development in Tanzania"; "First Report on the National Adult Education Programme: the Scope for Evaluation"; "A Comparison of Three-Script Literacy in Liberia"; and "Literacy Research: Some Observations on its Nature and Conduct."
