Abstract | A description is given of a study to determine whether the attitudes of white middle class student teachers toward children speaking Black dialect could be changed positively and their listening comprehension improved. In a special program conducted by a teacher center a group of student teachers were exposed to brief intensive training in listening to and analyzing tapes of children speaking in Black dialect. In subsequent comparative tests this group demonstrated greater comprehension of the dialect than did a group that did not receive training. The conclusion is drawn that attitudes of student teachers toward nonstandard dialects can be changed in a positive way. (JD) |
