| Abstract | A test was made to determine the impact of positive or negative expectations on individuals conducting formal observation of teachers in the classroom for the purpose of evaluation. Two groups of graduate students who were receiving training in classroom observation viewed a video tape of a teacher instructing her class. Group one was given the impression that she had been a fine education student in college; group two was told casually that she had not been outstanding in college. A review of the evaluation ratings by the two groups revealed that their responses to the teacher's classroom behavior was colored by the prefatory remarks they had heard, and that they were inclined to judge her with some positive or negative bias.
