| Abstract | Parents usually depend on educators to initiate parental involvement in education. This project assessed the attitudes of 104 low income, inner city black parents toward their child's school and how the parents saw themselves as being involved in their child's education. Subjects represented a random sample of parents whose children attended four schools (two elementary and two secondary) within a large, mid-south urban school system. Data were collected by interviewers who visited the home and conducted a structured interview of about one hour. The interview schedule consisted of 27 Likert-type questions on parents' attitudes about education, how parents see their involvement with their child's school, and parents' role in helping their child at home with school-related work. Three open-ended questions on parental concerns about education, teachers, and student competence completed the interview. The major findings were that the parents thought education was important and that schools were basically doing a good job and were concerned about their child's progress in school. Parents expressed their desire to stay informed of school business and to work in a supportive, facilitative role rather than a decision-making role. (Author) |
