Abstract | Designed for vocational teachers and administrators, this compilation of materials from various resources provides information, tips, and guidelines for evaluating instructional materials for sex bias and stereotypes, gives suggestions on using biased materials in a non-biased way, and presents guidelines for sex-equity in the classroom. Following an introduction, the first of nine additional sections lists guidelines for evaluating materials in language arts, social studies, mathematics, home economics/industrial arts, fine arts, sex education, natural and physical sciences, and picture books. Section three contains a list of twenty-six questions designed to assist in the development of non-biased curriculum material. The fourth section provides guidelines for using biased materials in a non-biased way. Section 5 presents a twenty-five item teacher self-evaluation questionnaire designed to increase awareness of stereotypes. The sixth section lists nine suggestions on what to do about sexism in elementary classrooms. Suggested guidelines for counselors to use in overcoming sex bias are given in section 7. Section 8 summarizes enrollments in vocational programs (by vocational area and by sex) in the United States, Delaware, Illinois, and West Virginia. The ninth section provides a list of fourteen myths about working women. The final section is an annotated list of sixty-sex equity references. (LRA) |
