AbstractExperiences in prenatal life and early childhood that may cause personality disorders or criminal behavior in later life are examined in these proceedings of the Subcommittee on Childhood Experiences as Causes of Criminal Behavior of the Standing Committee on Health, Welfare and Science. This issue, the eighteenth in a series of 19 hearings dating from November 1977 to July 1978, presents the testimony of Dr. T. R. Verny, which is focused on psychological dimensions of the intrauterine and birth experience of children. His central concern is to emphasize that the fetus and the child before age 2 are thinking, feeling human beings. Intrauterine experience is thought to provide an unconscious program for later behavior. Research findings which link the imposition of highly stressful conditions at birth with adult violence and criminality are reported. Evidence that the fetus responds to stimuli and is conscious is presented. Speculations about prenatal consciousness based on Dr. Verny's clinical experience are offered. Questions of committee members probe related issues such as hypnotic regression, preconditions for parenting and conditions at birth, unwanted children, and psychological defense against trauma. Recommendations are discussed. Both English and French texts are provided. (Author/RH)
