AbstractA study was conducted to examine the contributions to the determination of individuals' orientation to change made by such factors as the individuals' demographic, social structural, personality, and cognitive characteristics. Data were collected in a field sample of 159 adult residents of New Athens, Illinois, a town of 2,000 inhabitants near which the federal government had announced plans to build the nations' largest coal gasification plant, with predicted economic and social changes. The questionnaire used contained forced choice and open-ended items on such factors as age, education, occupation, income, social structural outlook, level of fatalism, communication behavior (mass and interpersonal), and degree of importance attached to the object of change. Results indicated that mass media exposure and interpersonal communication have predominant impact on the process of individual modernity; that as a personality characteristic, fatalism plays an important role in the process of individual modernity--although its impact is mediated by a number of intervening variables, including group membership; and that in a rural community in a highly-developed country, the variables which determine the individual's level of modernity are the same as those which account for such modernity in less-developed countries.
