AbstractThe connection between parental alcohol abuse and adolescent life stress, adolescent alcohol abuse and adolescent running away is explored in this study of 907 adolescents ranging in age from 12-17. The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not alcohol abuse and running away can be viewed as a response to, or an escape from stress. It is reported that the majority of runaways say they left home because of family problems, including parental alcohol abuse. A population of two groups, runaway and non-runaway, was used in this study to test for a correlation between parental alcohol abuse and adolescent running away. A questionnaire was administered to the entire population of 907 adolescents and a Life Events Inventory (LEI) was administered to a sub-sample of these adolescents. Final analysis of the questionnaire data supported positive correlations between adolescent alcohol abuse, running away and parental alcohol abuse. The analysis also showed similarities in drinking patterns for runaways and non-runaways. The results indicated, however, that despite many similar characteristics between runaways and non-runaways, differences existed between these two groups. It was found that parental alcohol use/abuse is one of the most significant factors in adolescents's drinking. (RLV)
