Abstract | The results of a four-year study of teachers' perceptions of their role at work and in private life are presented. Information about the teachers came from interviews, observations, and written statements of concerns of ten teachers during the first, third, and fourth year of teaching. Changes in the private segments of their personal lives such as marriage and parenthood changed their perceptions of priorities and satisfactions. Personal-professional role conflicts arose from concurrent demands for their time and allegiance. In the fourth year behaviors emerged designed to cope with tedium of the teaching job and growing role conflicts. Some abbreviated case histories are used for illustration. (JD) |
