Abstract | The social studies unit includes a teaching guide, teacher background material, student text, study guide, and composite pretest/posttest. Subject matter focuses on archaeological methods, history of man in America, and the Hopi Indians in the past and present. The unit is part of the Anthropology Curriculum Project and is designed to be used in the second grade one hour daily for 20-30 days. The unit objective is to provide students with a background for the understanding of man and his culture. Subject material is divided into three sections: a discussion of archaeologists and their methods, the origins and development of the American during the prehistoric period, and the Hopi Indians as an example of the continuation of the Southwest formative way of life into the 20th century. The teacher's guide suggests lesson plans for the unit, listing vocabulary, objectives and content, activities, review questions, educational media, and definitions. The teacher background materials examine the three subjects in detail and include charts, maps, and bibliographies. Drawings, maps, and charts illustrate the large print pupil text. The pupil's study guide introduces each subject, lists key words and ideas, suggests activities, encourages independent thinking by asking questions not answered in the text, and offers review questions. A vocabulary list and study exercises conclude the guide. The composite form for the pretest and posttest consists of 30 multiple-choice picture questions. (CK) |
