| Abstract | A computer simulation model for graduate education long-range planning is presented, and the national, state, and institutional forces acting on graduate education are examined. The model was designed to show the causal relationships between three major interdependent academic program elements within a large public university: undergraduate education, graduate education, and research. The Graduate Education Planning Model has been applied to the University of Amherst, both at the campus-wide graduate school level and at the smaller department/school level. The model's emphasis is on the institutional resources (students, staff, and budgets) that are directly reflected in the academic program, where parameters have been selected to allow the model to be applied either to an academic department or to the entire university's combined academic programs. The computer program is written in the FORTRAN Language and the model is based on the system dynamics approach. A bibliography is included. (SW) |
