AbstractTo determine the effectiveness of the Appalachian Maryland Experience-Based Career Education (EBCE) Project in meeting its aims and objectives, a third-party evaluation was conducted for 1977-78. Forty students in grade 12 participated in the project, spending four days a week at selected career sites and a day at the EBCE Learning Center receiving instruction from learning coordinators. In order to gather evaluation data, the students, as well as their parents, employers, and EBCE staff members, were interviewed. They were also given pre- and post-tests, including the Career Skills Assessment Program of the College Entrance Examination Board. A follow-up process was used to identify career patterns of first- and second-year project students. Based on the data collected, it was concluded that (1) the project received substantial support from the community; (2) students made significant gains in academic subjects as well as career decision-making and employment-seeking skills; (3) students' motivation level toward school was increased; and (4) the project was well managed, implemented, and publicized. It was recommended that the job sites be analyzed for strengths and weaknesses; feedback about the students be formalized; a full set of academic tests be given on a pre/post test basis; graduate followup be continued; local dissemination be aimed at parents and non-EBCE personnel; and an action plan be formulated for local adoption of the program.
