Abstract	Intensive leadership development programs in Pennsylvania, Michigan California, and Montana positively affected the participation of program graduates in public affairs organizations. The programs, begun in 1965, and designed to prepare young men and women from rural areas for more effective leadership in agricultural and public affairs, consisted of up to 123 days of workshop and seminar training over a three year period on local, state, national, and international levels. As expected, a consistent pattern of increased affiliation with public service organizations emerged from an analysis of data gathered from program graduates. Although there were no controls for sex, age, family characteristics, or socio-economic status, graduates in all four states increased their affiliations by an overall 57.6%. In all states the greatest gains in affiliations appeared in governmental and quasi-governmental public service organizations, followed by voluntary public service organizations. Participation in political parties, clubs, and interest groups rose in Michigan and Pennsylvania but declined in California and Montana. Overall, education service organizations showed the most gain, followed by planning and coordination services, especially those relating to land use, and economic and industrial development. (SB)
