Abstract | This manual is a collection of suggestions for lessons and learning activities for Labor Day (May 1st). It includes material for use with students at all levels, preschool, elementary and secondary school, and college. The activities are listed by level and subject matter. The subjects covered include English, art, reading, religious education, physical education and creative movement, French, geography, history, mathermatics, music, sciences, vocational education, sociology, economics, and political science. There is a brief history of working conditions in the 19th century, the organization of the working classes into trade unions, and the origin of the celebration of Labor Day, dating back to the 1870s. In addition, the position of teachers as members of the working class who carry out established State educational policies is examined. (MC) |
