AbstractIn order to identify and assess the unmet post-secondary educational needs and preferences of adults (age 17 or older) residing in Atlantic and Cape May Counties (New Jersey), 750 area adults were selected, using a random-digit sampling technique, and interviewed. Respondents were categorized as belonging to one of five relevant educational market segments: attending Atlantic Community College (N=27); attending another school/college (N=101); not attending, but definitely interested (N=313); not attending, but with limited interest (N=42); or not attending and not interested in attending (N=267). Study findings are presented in the following areas: (1) career and educational aspirations of area adults; (2) specific educational needs and preferences; (3) barriers and problems associated with obtaining more education; (4) time, space, and financial considerations; (5) attitudes and experiences of currently enrolled students; and (6) demographics of repondents. In addition, educational needs, plans, and preferences are projected, and the educational needs of each population segment are analyzed. General findings included that repondents were better educated than the national norm and more positive toward post-secondary education; and that many educational needs are unmet, not because of lack of availability, but because of other factors such as lack of time, conflicting family needs, cost, and lack of information.
