Abstract | Five pressures make writing difficult for freshman composition students: the pressure of perfectionism, the pressure of interesting an audience, the pressure of length, the pressure of finding an appropriate topic, and the pressure of time. Teachers can help students deal with these pressures through individual conferences with each student and by allowing them to experiment and fail without being inhibited by fear of a poor grade, by permitting them to choose their own topics, by allowing them to discontinue work on a piece that is going nowhere, and by assisting them in revising and perfecting without fear of premature evaluation.
