| Abstract | This report gives the results of a 1977 survey of secondary school principals by the National Institute of Education, Washington D.C. The purpose of the study was to empirically describe high school organization and programs and how they are affected by federal, state, and district characteristics. The results of the survey counteract many existing criticisms of today's high schools. For example, the extent of individual attention and organizational flexibility appear to be broader than is commonly thought. In addition to offering the basics, high schools provide considerable program diversity. The findings provide data to help administrators make more informed decisions about the problems high schools face in the areas of organization, management, and finance. (Author/LD) |
