AbstractThis handbook (written in English and French) provides guidelines for integrating children with special needs into regular day care programs and discusses the need for a network of social services for these children and their families. The guide explains (1) the rationale for mainstreaming and the advantages and disadvantages of categorizing special needs; (2) the main components of early developmental programs; (3) different forms mainstreaming can take and the major factors in instituting mainstreaming in a day care facility; and (4) how to structure a program for developmentally delayed children within a regular early childhood service and how to monitor the mainstreaming process. A checklist for assessing the quality of integrated preschool programs is included and examples are given of services (in addition to day care and preschool programs) which would comprise a total network of resources for children with special needs and their families. The guide concludes with a discussion of the directions in which service for handicapped children should go (e.g., inter-agency coordination). A resource section with references to printed and audiovisual materials and an appendix listing Canadian organizations for handicapped persons are included. (BH)
