AbstractPrograms are needed to help future educational administrators cope with the changing role of the administrator. Administrators must be trained in the analytical process of planning and in the political process of mediating. Preparation programs must be designed to help secure administrators who can both think and act. Programs should include the establishment and support of training centers in major universities, active recruitment, rigorous selection procedures, involvement of the entire university faculty, use of simulated materials, computer-based decision-making exercises, high quality clinical experiences, and application of skills in a small group made up of 15-20 future administrators and a few faculty. Faculty members from related areas, selected practicing administrators, and key leaders in the community should contribute to the training. Many universities need to discontinue their present programs; new resources must be secured; certification requirements must be revised or eliminated; and faculties in educational administration will need to be substantially reconstituted.
