Abstract | A nationwide survey collected opinions of high school teachers to determine if there is a decline in the mathematics achievement of high school students and to determine the causes for this decline. The following conclusions were reported: (1) students have a weak mathematical background when they enter high school and poor study habits in high school compound the problem; (2) minimum academic standards are not set by teachers, yet administrators do not encourage teachers to set minimum academic standards; and (3) students are more frequently absent from class than in the past.
