Abstract	The supply of physicians in the United States and the way in which physician graduate medical education programs are established are discussed. Too many physicians are being trained within certain specialties and too few are being trained as primary care physicians. No system exists for ensuring that the number and types of physicians being trained is consistent with the approximate number needed. Federal agencies that directly or indirectly support graduate medical training programs make little effort to coordinate the numbers and types of those being trained. There is disagreement among medical organizations on the need to control physician specialty distribution. It is suggested that the Secretary of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) should discuss with the Coordinating Council on Medical Education the possibility of engaging in national studies of physician supply and requirements. HEW's Graduate Medical Education National Advisory Committee should play an active role in determining the scope of these studies and in monitoring their progress. The committee should also review in-depth the Coordinating Council's completed studies and provide the Secretary with its detailed comments and recommendations. (SW)
