Abstract	This analysis of the National Certifying Examination for Operating Room Technicians revealed that examinee's performance was related to their educational preparation. Utilizing test results from 2,841 candidates, the performance of first time candidates was compared to the performance of graduates of one or two-year programs and of technicians who received on-the-job training. The failure rate was lowest for the first-time candidates; the risk of failure increased each time the examination was repeated. Job-trained technicians had a higher failure rate as a group. With respect to formal training, two-year program graduates had a higher performance level. Analysis of the scores in each content area of the examination indicated that although there were significant differences in scores between program graduates and job-trained technicians, the strong and weak content areas were essentially the same for all groups. A series of recommendations include general guidelines and suggestions for technician training programs, a list of behavioral objectives for the content areas identified as difficult, and topics to be considered for future research.
