AbstractBased on the realization that the arts humanize the teaching process, motivate learning in all areas of the curriculum, and answer the need for creative expression, the Oklahoma plan was instituted in 1976 to provide a comprehensive arts program for the public schools. Its approaches include in-depth instruction by arts specialists, integration of art into all areas of the basic curriculum, and special arts education for handicapped and gifted students. Section one of this report, "The Arts Are Us," presents reports from demonstration schools. These reports provide an overview of projects in the schools, from painting wall murals to a description of a typical day of an arts coordinator. Section two, "What Makes It Work," offers suggestions for program planning, staff development, and teacher education. Options for structuring the arts within the context of general education, suggestions for pooling resources, and methods of evaluating an arts program are given. Section three, "Meeting Special Needs," describes a summer arts institute for the talented and a state plan for the handicapped. Section four, "The Arts in Education--A National Movement," provides strategies for educational change and suggestions for staff involvement in order to help schools become more responsive to their own needs and to available resources. Methods of planning, implementation, and evaluation as well as responsibilities of administrators and staff are outlined in the appendix. (KC)
