AbstractAt the University of South Florida the College of Natural Sciences administers the premedical sciences advising program. The program is designed to assist students seeking admission to a professional school in the health sciences. Advisors in the program have the dual responsibility of counselor and evaluator. The evaluation process estimates the potential of the applicant as a professional in the field. To assist the advisors in evaluation, an investigation was conducted to determine the cognitive and noncognitve variables that had the greatest correlation and predictive value for successful admission to schools of medicine and dentistry. A multiple regression analysis was performed on data collected from the files of applicants from the College, separately for premedical and predental students. The results from the College, separately for premedical and predental students. The results indicate that the selection process remains highly subjective for both groups. Grades and test scores continue to be key factors, but other variables such as ratings by former instructors are also important. The analysis identified the top 11 variables that in combination have the greatest predictive value for medical school admission, and for dental schools the top eight variables were identified. It is recommended that the results be disseminated to premedical science students and advisors. (Author/MSE)
