Abstract | This study delineates the interaction of language and culture as it relates to foreign language instruction and describes appropriate teaching strategies for the implementation of culture in the foreign language classroom. The study is based on the thesis that language and culture are not separable; the teaching of culture is properly a part of foreign language instruction. Relevant professional literature was reviewed in preparation of the study in order to (1) ascertain developments in the field, (2) select examples of esthetic value from the target cultures, and (3) examine techniques for optimum instructional purposes. The modes described in the study are both examples from the literature reviewed and innovations of the writer. Chapter 1 introduces the study; Chapter 2 gives the historical background of foreign language teaching in the United States; Chapter 3 discusses the recent developments in viewing language; Chapter 4 explains the reasons why culture should be a part of foreign language instruction; Chapter 5 describes a variety of teaching techniques for use in the foreign language classroom and suggests appropriate cultural resource materials; and Chapter 6 concludes the study and makes recommendations concerning the professional background of foreign language teachers.
