Abstract | The "waystage" objective for adult modern language learning in the European unit/credit system is described. Waystage is an intermediary objective below "threshold level," the latter stage being the minimum proficiency level likely to be required to function adequately in temporary contacts with foreign language speakers in everyday situations. The Waystage level is not a terminal objective but an articulation point for courses leading up to threshold level. The model specifying all language learning objectives within the unit/credit system is described, and principles used in the derivation of waystage from threshold level are discussed. A qeneral description of the waystage objective and content specification in terms of functions, notions, and their exponents are covered, and the total lexical and structural content of the objective is presented in the form of lexical and structural inventories.
