| Abstract | Aimed at increasing adults' appreciation of children's literature, this book applies the techniques of literary criticism to those children's classics with which the author admits an imaginative sympathy. The essays are arranged according to the chronological order of the works, and each suggests the historical pressures on the authors, the trends at the time the books were written, and the influence the individual books had on later literature. Books are assessed in terms of their weaknesses as well as their strong points. The ten essays consider the following topics: the reactions of children and adults to children's literature, fairy tales, written tales from Charles Perrault to Hans Christian Andersen, the role of talking animals, Lewis Carroll, Beatrix Potter, Kenneth Grahame, Rudyard Kipling, L. Frank Baum and Oz, and the pigs in the "Freddy books" and in "Charlotte's Web." (MAI) |
