| Abstract | This module discusses some of the objectives of incorporating vegetative cover in land treatment systems. Specific crops and forest cover are mentioned in relation to benefits associated with each, and specific treatment alternatives (irrigation, overland flow, and rapid infiltration) are included in relation to vegetative cover considerations. Waste treatment by land application rests on the ability of a given site to handle additions of both water and other waste constituents. A suitable vegetative cover enhances the capacity of soil to accept and renovate wastes through several means. Rooted plants protect the soil from erosion loss, encourage and maintain infiltration, accelerate soil drying through transpiration, absorb nutrients, produce economic benefits from crop harvest, and possess an aesthetic appeal.
