Abstract | The purpose of the Library/School Resource Project was to develop and implement a "transportable" library/school program model for special needs children and their parents. Its objectives were to: (1) identify available resources for use by teachers, parents, and their special needs children; (2) provide a system whereby everyone could have access to these resources; and, (3) by using the public library facilities, to offer parents specialized training sessions so that they could become more effective in dealing with the responsibilities of being a parent of a handicapped child. Components of the model include a literature search; formation of community team; approval authorization; local needs assessment; formulation of a resource catalog; staff orientation; parent awareness effort; implementation of the project; and analysis and revision. Step by step procedures are given for each component of the model to facilitate the effective implementation of all stages of the project. A listing of helpful agencies and organizations, materials evaluation forms, suggested books for handicapped learners, parent questionnaire, and a bibliography on school/public library cooperation are included in the appendices.
