| Abstract | The current prevalence of drug use among American high school seniors and the trends in use since 1975 are the two major topics treated. Also reported are prevailing attitudes and beliefs among seniors concerning various types of drug use. Eleven separate classes of drugs are distinguished: marihuana (including hashish), inhalants, hallucinogens, cocaine, heroin, natural and synthetic opiates other than heroin, stimulants, sedatives, tranquilizers, alcohol, and cigarettes. Considerable attention is focused on drug use at the higher frequency levels, in order to help differentiate levels of seriousness, or extent of drug involvement. A relatively accurate picture of the drug experiences and attitudes of each high school class in the United States, beginning with the class of 1975 is presented. Accurate changes in usage are monitored from one year to another, for both high school seniors as a whole and for particular subgroups. (Author/KA) |
