| Abstract | This volume documents the United States participation in a multi-national study of student achievement in six subject matter areas and presents the results of a number of analyses of U.S. data that should be of interest to American educators. Subject areas dealt with include science, reading comprehension, literature, French as a foreign language, English as a foreign language, and civic education. The U.S. data are analyzed in a comparative international perspective, by four regions of the U.S., by various school and pupil characteristics (including teacher variables), and between predominantly black and predominantly white schools. The analyses attempt to clarify the relationships among academic achievement and various school and non-school variables. (Author/EB) |
