| Abstract | Comparing librarianship and science in terms of their objectives and methods of study, and their objects and means of mastery, results in the conclusion that they are antithetical as knowledge systems because the substance of librarianship is instrumental to science and vice versa. The resulting differences between them may be summarized as follows: objects of study--science studies matter while librarianship studies form; method of study--the scientific method is empirical, while librarianship employs rational methods; objects of mastery--science aims at the management of matter while librarianship aims at the management of form; and means of mastery--the scientific means is form while librarianship relies on matter as a means of managing form.
