| Abstract | The background and activities of the Ad Hoc Committee on Unionization and Collective Bargaining of the American Philosophical Association are described, and the results of various investigations conducted by the Committee are summarized. Topics include the choice of an agent, or no agent, in unionizing; student role in governance; teaching and research conditions and the effects of unionization; governance structures; appointments, promotion, and tenure; and salary and benefits. Responses to a questionnaire (which is appended) sent to association members are summarized, and 21 suggestions are offered for making unionization more effective. The American Philosophical Association appears to be the first learned society to create a committee to study the implications of collective bargaining and to develop information and recommendations for its membership. Appendices include reports of the research teams on 10 higher educational institutions (California State College, Centralia College, Central Michigan University, Herbert Lehman College, Illinois Valley Community College. Macomb County Community College, Rutgers University, St. John's University, Temple University, and the University of Hawaii), comparative salary data on some target institutions, analysis of responses to the questionnaire, excerpts from reports by other organizations, and a short bibliography of publications about faculty unionization.
