Abstract | One in a series designed to assist Arizona elementary and junior high school teachers in developing children's traffic safety skills, this curriculum guide for grade 3 contains seven lessons on bicycles and an appendix on conducting a bicycle rodeo. Introductory information provided for the teacher includes basic highway safety concepts, stressing communication methods for highway users, visibility and judgmental problems, predictability of behavior, and the traffic/pedestrian environment; instructions for using this program, explaining evaluation methods; Arizona laws and Mesa city ordinances governing bicycle operation; and general rules for bicycle safety. The lessons cover the following subjects: bicycle fit and maintenance; care and use of brakes; rules for safe bicycling; mixing with traffic; security for bicycles not in use; and courtesy. The appendix gives information on conducting bicycle rodeos, covering the topics of sponsors, technical assistance, and planning. For each lesson a complete plan is provided, incorporating objectives, key points, a list of needed materials, suggested basic and enrichment activities, student assessment procedures, and additional resource materials. The types of activities include demonstrations, reading assignments, class discussions, drawing, and role playing. (ELG) |
