Abstract	This book focuses on black suburbanization in the Los Angeles area, and questions whether the national increase in black suburbanization should be viewed with optimism or pessimism. The study addresses three questions: (1) Does the presence of substantial black populations in suburban areas represent suburbanization as it is normally thought of, or is it simply the spatial extension of the ghetto? (2) Does the suburban dispersal of blacks through the regular market process lead to a racial pattern with some promise of stability for the future or to patterns conducive to rapid and continuous population transition? and (3) Does the black suburban population experience improvements in conditions and evaluate them as improvements over conditions in past areas of residence? Discussion and statistical data focus on: (1) the demography of minority suburbanization in Los Angeles; (2) the response of individual community governments to economic, class and racial issues in the black suburbanization process; (3) improving conditions in the areas of housing, order and safety, education, health, asset maintenance, business, citizen attitudes, and political influence.
