| Abstract | This report presents detailed social and economic statistics for the population of the United States below the poverty level in 1976, based on the March 1977 Current Population Survey. Data are presented by selected characteristics such as race, family status, residence, education, work experience, and type and source of income. Poverty data for the 20 largest Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSAs) and their central cities are also included. Among the highlights of the study are the following: (1) the number of persons in poverty declined by about 900,000 between 1975 and 1976; (2) the overall 3.5% decline in the incidence of poverty was not distributed evenly throughout the population; and (3) in 1976, as in previous years, blacks, persons of Spanish origin, children under 18 years of age, elderly persons, and persons in families with a female householder (no husband present) constituted larger proportions of the poverty population than of the population as a whole.
