AbstractTitle V of the California State Administrative Codes requires community colleges to provide special counseling services for students who are not high school graduates or who are graduates with less than a 2.0 high school grade point average (GPA). In an effort to better serve the special counseling students at Reedley College (California), 18 special counseling day students were identified, and a number of comparisons were made between general and specific majors, Opportunities and Supportive Instructional Services (OASIS) and non-OASIS students, and students under and over 22 years of age. Results, which were determined to be significant at least to the 5% level of confidence, indicated that specific majors had fewer counseling contacts and higher GPAs; OASIS students completed fewer units and more frequently received financial aid; and students over 22 had higher GPAs (above 2.0), were more frequently general majors and less frequently high school graduates. None of the 18 students completely withdrew during the semester, and all 18 registered for at least one course in the following spring. Raw data covering major, status, units attempted, units completed, withdrawals, GPA, financial aid, OASIS status, and age are presented in tabular form. (TP)
