AbstractTo determine if there are qualitative as well as quantitative differences in the syntactic errors committed by good and poor readers, two studies were conducted. In the first, 31 third graders, grouped as either good or poor readers according to reading grade equivalent scores, completed a 300 word cloze passage. The results suggested that poor readers do make more errors that violate the grammatical structure of the sentences in which they occur than do good readers. Further, poor readers seem to be less sensitive to syntax and are less able to use syntactic information to predict words in sentences than are good readers. To discover whether these findings were due to reading level differences or to the particular cloze passage chosen, a second study was undertaken. In this study, a second passage was completed by the same two groups and by a third group of very poor readers. Again the results indicated that poor readers make errors that differ in both quality and quantity from those committed by good readers. More research is needed on the nature of these syntactic differences and on how good and poor readers of varying ages and socioeconomic status differ. (FL)
