AbstractDuring summer 1975, Cochise College surveyed 150 (96 responded) community colleges in the six regional accrediting associations to determine their practices in granting credit for non-traditional learning experiences. The study had four objectives: to compare the practices of the North Central association, to which Cochise College belongs, with those of the five other associations; to examine enrollment sizes to see if they influence credit granting policies; to determine whether date of institutional establishment altered credit granting practices; and to describe the differences in types of credit awarded between public and private colleges. Colleges in all six districts awarded varying degrees of credit for College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams, for work experiences, for military experience, for United States Armed Forces Institute participation, for courses taken in non-accredited institutions, and for in-service professional training. Every district except the Western district granted credit for travel experiences; the North Central association required the highest CLEP scores; and the Western and Northwestern associations most frequently awarded work experience credit. The only significant difference between public and private colleges was that private colleges tended to be older. Differences between enrollments and criteria for awarding credit are explored. (TR)
