Abstract | A guide developed by classroom teachers of foreign languages is presented. It is intended to be a practical tool for the teacher who wants to develop in students a set of skills which are sequentially presented. It is also directed to administrators and supervisors so that they too may participate in the development of a vital foreign language program. The guide contains four matrices. The first one provides an overview of the K-12 program; the others indicate the objectives to be accomplished in each grade at the elementary, middle and secondary levels. The following areas are covered in subsequent chapters: (1) basic communication skills, specifically objectives and activities in listening, speaking, reading and writing; (2) culture and civilization including way-of-life culture, literature, music, art, architecture, history and social institutions; (3) grammar; (4) Latin programs; (5) mini-courses; (6) career education; and (7) exploratory programs. The guide also provides a selected bibliography of works considered by the committee to be current, academically sound, readable, practical and reasonably priced. (AMH) |
