AbstractMaurice Sendak, illustrator of over 60 books (including 10 he has written), was interviewed by Virginia Haviland, head of the library of Congress Children's Book Section. Topics discussed in this interview include: Sendak's own reaction to books as a child; the role fantasy plays in the lives of children and adults; the recurring symbol in Sendak's books of ingesting something and then giving it out again; some of the great writers for children; specific elements relevant to the children's book illustrator; the sources of inspiration for Sendak's books; variation of styles used for different books; the changes in children's book publishing since the early 1950s; and the universal appeal of children's books.
